This latest entry is very late in coming, since I haven't had any time to write recently (except for working on the background story). As the name of this article suggests, I've decided to majorly alter planetary invasion and defense. At the end of this article I've posted a whole bunch of screenshots of some new ships cooked up by Edward Ladner for TBL.
In GalCiv2, I found it kind of stupid that you could just takeone or two transports in and totally anhihilate the defending forces, so I decided that changes needed to be made to the way planetary invasion and defense work.
First off, I decided that planetary defense needs to be better, so I've added a whole bunch of techs that increase the defenders advantage a bit. This alone should be enough to halt invasions that use one ship. Then to make invasion even harder, there are a bunch of defensive systems you could build on your planets to repel invasion forces. Think about it. How cool would it be if instead of one ship showing up on your doorstep and then just taking your planet in with ease, a whole fleet of transports had to arrive to conquer your planet?
Of course to combat the new found power of defensive forces, invasion is also getting an overhaul. To combat the defensive upgrades, there are going to be many invasion tactics that do many different things. Some will hurt them and help you. Others will just help you and do nothing to them. Yet others will just hurt them and of course there are other combinations of effects as well. Some may be so expensive that it only pays to use them in do or die situations. Overall it will be a much more interesting experience when invading planets or trying to set up defenses to save them.
Here are those ships I mentioned.
